Business Spotlight: John Braid

This month we caught up with John Braid from Olli Blair Architects.

How would you describe your business in one sentence?

We’re here to help clients realise their vision on personal domestic construction projects to large scale commercial operations requiring bespoke buildings, and everything in between.

How did you get started?

I can trace my start back to my early childhood. My dad was a draughtsman and I used to enjoy playing with the set squares, pens and scale rules etc. I later realised I had an interest in design and building things, so it was inevitable really that I headed to a career in architecture.

…and how are things going currently?

Despite the omnicrisis we seem to be in these days, we are keeping busy. We have offices in Plockton and Inverness and both are going well.

What are the small, super-niche things that you love about your business?

We’re not stuck in an office all day! We’re blessed with the most amazing scenery in the Highlands, and I get to travel through it on a regular basis on my way to site visits, or to meet prospective clients.

What is the biggest challenge about operating a small business in the Highlands?

Making people aware of your presence, but networking is helping with that.

What’s something you and your business have done that you’re really proud of?

Olli Blair Architecture Ltd is a RIBA Chartred Practice; a status awarded to Practices committed to high standards of design, professionalism, sustainability and ethics.

As a Practice, we have extensive experience on a range of project types, including domestic, industrial/commercial, distilleries, healthcare and schools, hotels etc.  We also have multiple specialisms in-house, including 3D visualisation and energy assessment.

What’s playing in the background while you work?

I love music! When I’m working my Spotify is usually blasting out Metal/hard rock. I’m also married to a musician though, so if my wife is rehearsing for gig, Spotify has to take a back seat.

What’s your customer round-trip record?

Probably Strontian. I had a small adaption project in the school over there which necesitated a 3 hour drive there, including boat crosssing, and then the same back. Nice day out!

Tell us one industry secret that we probably won’t know (bonus point if knowing will improve our lives!)

I am a Chartered Architectural Technologist, which in the words of CIAT “are qualified designers who lead a range of built environment projects large and small – from schools to sports stadiums to high rise buildings.”

And nobody knows what a Chartered Architectural Technologist is!

What’s next for you or your business?

The business is well know on the west coast, but has only in recent times set up an Inverness presence. We’re working to raise the profile over at this side and networking is definitely helping!
